28th April 2019

This afternoon we had an enjoyable session listening to space-themed music, from 1880s Mahler to 2018 Eric Whitacre. Claudia kindly provided some delicious homemade jam tarts for us to snack on!

We explored many different genres this session: opera, orchestral, brass band, solo horn and solo piano. Each had a different sound world but many returned to the same means of presenting the vastness of the universe – long, sustained single notes; slow dynamic builds; threateningly low brass and strings; dissonant augmented chords. Paul Lovatt-Cooper brought the brass, Messaien brought the weirdness, Casagrande brought the obscurity, Whitacre brought the beauty, Mahler brought the awe.
