'Failed Creators'? Women Composers Through Time

On 25th October Alice Haylock spoke about the lives and works of several women composers, detailing their backgrounds, struggles, compositional strengths and analysing why most people have never heard of them.

Including two live performances, we listened to works by Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Clara Schumann, Germaine Tailleferre, Elisabeth Lutyens and Errolyn Wallen, which can all be found on this YouTube Playlist.

We explored the preconceptions of many critics, along with the common accusation that women write music that is too 'feminine'; our own unconscious biases and the fact that many girls are still brought up to believe, subconsciously, that women can't compose.
